What Does a Civil Attorney Do?

When a person hears the name of our firm, the Law Offices of John M. Phillips, we hope that they do not think that all we do is file civil suits, because we do far more than that here at the Law Offices of John M. Phillips. We consider ourselves victim advocates, storytellers and a voice for the voiceless.

When someone becomes a victim to a crime or wrongful act of another, the perpetrator of that act should have to answer for his actions. Victims of a crime can sue the perpetrator and others (such as business establishments) who bear responsibility for the crime, the injuries involved, or in some instances, the death of a loved one.  The goal of these civil suits is to (1) hold defendants accountable for committing the crime, (2) raise the bar of those places (businesses) who allow it to happen, (3) add a second layer of investigation to what the State may already be doing, and (4) seek to compensate the victim or the victim’s family for the harm that was caused.

In addition to holding those in the wrong accountable for their actions, we also march, fight, hug, listen and act as a shield and a voice for victims. In some cases, a family who has fallen victim to a tragic event, or has lost a loved one, will gain the attention (even when unwanted) of local, and sometimes, national media. We seek to protect these families from the negative effects of such attention. This includes protecting a family’s name from being defamed or from being used by third parties for their own financial gain or notoriety. Victimization of the victim happens all too often.

If you or a family member have been the victim of a crime, a civil lawyer can evaluate the legal liabilities and determine if there is a case. Consultations at the Law Offices of John M. Phillips are free and in almost all cases, civil lawyers are compensated on a contingency basis, which means that you only pay the lawyer if he or she recovers something for you. In other words, there is no risk involved in setting up a consultation.

Most importantly, the attorneys and staff at the Law Offices of John M. Phillips truly care about their clients. We would not only be honored to represent you, but we treat our clients like we would treat our best friends. We care about you. We would love to hear your story and we are here to help.
