Nassau County Personal Injury & Family Law Attorneys

Nassau County is one of the fastest-growing counties in Florida — and one of the most underserved by elite legal representation. When Nassau County residents are seriously injured or facing a divorce, Phillips Hunt Whited is the answer. We represent Nassau County injury victims and families with the same resources, credentials, and commitment we bring to every client across Northeast Florida.

Our founding partner John Phillips is ranked among the Forbes Top 200 Personal Injury Attorneys in the United States for 2025 and has secured over $495 million in verdicts and settlements. Our family law partner Matt Hunt is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law by the Florida Bar — a credential held by fewer than one percent of Florida attorneys and by no attorney competing for your business in Nassau County.

We advance all costs on personal injury cases. You pay nothing unless we win. We do not charge clients for copies or document fees at the close of your case.

Personal Injury in Nassau County

Nassau County’s growth corridor — the SR-200/A1A corridor between Yulee and Fernandina Beach, the I-95 interchange at SR-200, and US-1 through Callahan and Hilliard — carries an increasingly dangerous mix of commuter traffic, commercial trucks, and drivers unfamiliar with local road conditions. The SR-200 corridor in particular has seen a significant increase in serious crashes as residential and commercial development accelerates in Yulee.

Motor Vehicle Accidents — From rear-end crashes on SR-200 to T-bone collisions at rural intersections in Callahan, we handle car accident cases across Nassau County. Florida’s PIP system covers your first $10,000 in medical expenses and lost wages, but serious injuries routinely exceed those limits. We pursue full recovery through the at-fault driver’s liability policy and your own UM/UIM coverage.

Commercial Truck Accidents — I-95 and US-1 carry substantial commercial freight through Nassau County. Tractor-trailer accidents often involve multiple defendants and critical evidence — electronic logging device data, driver qualification files, and inspection records — that must be preserved immediately. We move fast to secure it.

Pedestrian Accidents — As Nassau County develops, more pedestrians are navigating roads that were designed for vehicles. Crosswalk accidents, parking lot incidents, and neighborhood pedestrian strikes can produce catastrophic injuries. We investigate these cases thoroughly, including traffic engineering analysis when road design contributed to the crash.

Wrongful Death — If a family member was killed due to someone else’s negligence anywhere in Nassau County, Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (§ 768.19, Fla. Stat.) gives the personal representative of the estate the right to pursue recovery for surviving family members. Call us before speaking with any insurance representative.

Slip and Fall and Premises Liability — Retail developments, restaurants, and commercial properties in Fernandina Beach and the Yulee corridor have legal obligations to maintain reasonably safe premises. When they fail and someone is seriously hurt, we hold them accountable.

Nassau County Courts

Nassau County is in Florida’s 4th Judicial Circuit, along with Duval and Clay counties. Personal injury and family law matters are handled in the Nassau County Courthouse in Yulee. We have litigated cases in the 4th Circuit and know its courts, its procedures, and its judges. Our trial record produces maximum settlement value and maximum trial verdicts.

Family Law in Nassau County: Board Certified Representation

Nassau County’s rapid growth means more families, more marriages — and more divorces. Whether your case involves a contested timesharing battle, an alimony dispute under Florida’s reformed 2023 law, a child support modification, or a high-asset dissolution, the quality of your attorney matters enormously.

Matt Hunt is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law by the Florida Bar. This is not a directory listing or a pay-to-play award. It is the Florida Bar’s formal recognition that Matt has practiced family law at the highest level — meeting minimum practice requirements, passing a written examination, and surviving peer review for professionalism and competence. He is AV-Preeminent rated and recognized on the Florida Super Lawyers list. He is among the youngest attorneys in Florida to have achieved Board Certification in marital and family law.

No competing attorney serving Nassau County clients holds this credential.

Divorce — Florida is a pure no-fault divorce state under § 61.052, Fla. Stat. Contested divorces turn on equitable distribution of marital assets (§ 61.075), timesharing and parental responsibility (§ 61.13), and alimony (§ 61.08). We handle all three with the depth they require.

Timesharing and Custody — Since July 1, 2023, Florida courts presume that equal (50/50) timesharing is in the child’s best interest under the changes made by HB 1409. Matt Hunt has litigated under the new framework and knows how to build the factual record that determines the outcome.

Alimony — Florida’s 2023 alimony reform abolished permanent alimony and imposed durational caps: 50% of the marriage for short marriages (under 10 years), 60% for moderate marriages (10–20 years), and 75% for long marriages (over 20 years). Understanding exactly how the new law applies to your marriage length, income situation, and standard of living is critical.

Child Support — Florida’s income shares model under § 61.30, Fla. Stat. calculates support based on both parents’ combined net income and allocates the obligation proportionally. We ensure the calculation is done correctly.

Modification — When a substantial, material, and unanticipated change in circumstances has occurred since your final judgment, you may be entitled to modify timesharing, child support, or alimony. Matt Hunt evaluates modification cases candidly and does not take cases that do not meet the legal threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions: Nassau County

How soon should I call an attorney after a car accident in Nassau County?
As soon as possible — and before giving any recorded statement to an insurance adjuster. Evidence degrades quickly and Florida’s statute of limitations for personal injury is two years from the date of injury under § 95.11(4)(a), Fla. Stat. Do not wait.

What happens if the driver who hit me has no insurance?
Florida does not require drivers to carry bodily injury liability insurance, making uninsured motorist (UM) claims common. If you have UM/UIM coverage on your own policy, that coverage compensates you for what an uninsured at-fault driver cannot pay. We handle UM claims regularly and know how to maximize the recovery.

Can I get an emergency custody order in Nassau County?
Yes, under Florida Rule of Family Law Procedure 12.610, a court may enter a temporary injunction or emergency order if there is an immediate and present danger to a child. Contact us immediately if you believe your child is in danger.

What is equitable distribution and how does it work?
Under § 61.075, Fla. Stat., marital assets and liabilities are distributed equitably — meaning fairly, though not necessarily 50/50. The court identifies which assets are marital (acquired during the marriage) and which are non-marital, values each asset, and distributes them. Disputes over classification and valuation are common in divorces involving real estate, retirement accounts, and business interests.
